Description

This Napoleonic Road walking tour near Trieste covers about 7 km of Karst coast, from Opicina by historic tram to Monte Grisa, Prosecco and Miramare Park.

The Napoleonic Road walking tour near Trieste begins on the historic tram, which climbs from the city centre to Opicina, where the walk starts beside the obelisk. From there the path follows the Karst edge with the Gulf of Trieste spread out below, and the guide explains the local climate and the plants that grow along the way.

After the first stretch of about 3.7 km comes a climb of roughly 15 minutes, passing the Vedetta d'Italia viewpoint, to the Sanctuary of Monte Grisa, a church in brutalist style on top of a hill. From the top you look over the rooftops of central Trieste, the sailing boats and the open sea.

Another 1.5 km along the old road brings you to the village of Prosecco, the origin of the name of the well-known wine. You hear how winemaking began here in Roman times and taste a young local wine in a nearby bar or an osmiza, depending on the season. The last leg goes down to the sea and into the park around Miramare Castle, once home to Archduke Maximilian of Austria and now a garden of exotic plants. Part of the way down is on steps for about 15 minutes, which tired knees may notice.

  • Guided walk of about 7 km, around four hours in total
  • Historic tram fare up to the starting point
  • Tasting in Prosecco
  • Tour of Miramare Park (the castle ticket is not included)

A shorter version skips the first stretch and starts from Prosecco by bus; request it in advance. It suits people with a basic level of fitness, not wheelchair users or children under 5.
