Description
A private walking tour of Trieste lets you set the pace, and this one covers the essentials of the city in two and a half hours with a local guide. It usually begins at Molo Audace, with a view over Piazza dell'Unità d'Italia, though the guide can collect you from your hotel instead.
A short uphill stretch leads to San Silvestro, a Romanesque church, and the baroque Santa Maria Maggiore. The route then follows the Roman city: you pass through the Arco di Riccardo, the lone gate left of the old city walls, and by the Roman Theatre. Down in Borgo Teresiano the Grand Canal is lined with neoclassical palaces of the 1700s and 1800s, with Sant'Antonio Taumaturgo, the biggest Catholic church in the city, and the Serbian Orthodox San Spiridione close by.
You greet the bronze statue of James Joyce on the Red Bridge, and the walk ends in Piazza della Borsa, with its Neptune fountain and buildings from the baroque, Art Nouveau and rationalist periods.
