Description
This private walking tour in Trieste starts and ends on Piazza Unità d'Italia, among the biggest squares in Europe facing the sea. Over about two hours a licensed guide explains how Trieste grew into a thriving Mitteleuropean port, with the Palazzo del Municipio, the Palazzo del Governo and the Caffè degli Specchi as backdrop.
From there you climb toward the Cathedral of San Giusto on its hill, with a Romanesque front, bell towers, mosaics and frescoes. Close by are the Roman city walls and the medieval Civic Tower, then Piazza della Borsa, once the center of trade, and Via Carducci with its cafés. The Roman Theatre is seen from outside.
- Piazza della Libertà and its neoclassical buildings
- The Old Port, with sea views and tales of trade
- Via San Nicolò and Via Cavana, with hidden courtyards, iron balconies and tight passages
The group is yours alone, so you can slow down or ask questions along the way. The tour is led in English, Italian or German. Wear comfortable shoes, because some streets are uneven, and bring a camera.
