Description

The Lapidario Tergestino is Trieste's museum of Roman stones, in the vaults of the Lalio Bastion of San Giusto Castle: about 130 finds that tell the story of Tergeste, the ancient city, with inscriptions, reliefs and statues.

The stones are arranged by place: the forum, the basilica and the Roman theater, the source of statues and inscriptions; the temples of the Bona Dea and the Great Mother; the sacred area of Silvanus; the seaside villa of Barcola with its mosaics; the necropolises along the roads to Istria and Aquileia.

Many are funerary and honorary inscriptions of the people of Trieste of two thousand years ago. The bastion, on the southeast side of the castle, was added between 1551 and 1561 and bears the name of its first designer, Lalio. The lapidarium opened there in 2001.
