Description
Trieste's Museo del Mare tells the story of the city's port and the evolution of ships, since 2023 in Magazzino 26 of the Porto Vecchio, a huge late-19th-century warehouse. It is the right place to understand why Trieste was born and grew up on the sea.
There are models of merchant sailing ships built by local shipyards, cutaway hulls, the terrestrial and celestial globes of the Academy of Commerce and Nautical Science founded by Maria Theresa in 1754, and the studies on the propeller for steamships, tested for the first time in Trieste in 1829.
In the Sala Marconi is the telegraph key with which, on March 26, 1930, Guglielmo Marconi, aboard his yacht Elettra anchored in Genoa, switched on 3,000 light bulbs at Sydney's town hall. Next to it are a section of the hull, the anchor and the radios of the Elettra.
