Description
The Museum of the Risorgimento and Oberdan Memorial is Trieste's museum devoted to the city's long road to Italy, from the uprisings of 1848 to World War I, on Via XXIV Maggio. Its strongest piece is the cell where Guglielmo Oberdan was locked up.
In the memorial you can see the original cell, the only remnant of the Austrian barracks where the patriot was imprisoned and hanged in 1882, with Attilio Selva's statue of Oberdan between two winged figures, the Fatherland and Liberty. In the museum are original copies of the 1848 newspaper La Favilla, memorabilia of the Garibaldini from the Julian region and objects donated by Oberdan's mother.
Oberdan had planned an attack on Emperor Franz Joseph that never came off. After the barracks were torn down in 1927, Umberto Nordio built the museum complex in their place; it opened in 1934.
