Description

The Diego de Henriquez War Museum for Peace is Trieste's military museum: weapons, vehicles and memorabilia gathered by a single man, displayed so that seeing war up close teaches people to want peace. It has been open since 2014.

The collection includes tanks, cannons such as the German 17 cm Kanone 18 at the entrance, a Lancia armored car from World War I, and three midget submarines: two German ones recovered at Sistiana and the Italian CB22, the first submarine to become a museum piece. Then uniforms, model ships and documents.

Diego de Henriquez (1909-1974) collected everything: in 1945 he asked the surrendering Germans for one example of every weapon of the garrison. He wrote diaries running to more than 50,000 pages and died in 1974 in a fire at his warehouse, where he slept in a coffin. Doubts about his death have never died down.
