Description

The Museo di Storia ed Arte e Orto Lapidario is Trieste's civic archaeological museum, on San Giusto Hill, next to the cathedral. It tells the story of the area from prehistory to Roman times, with a few surprises that came from very far away.

Inside, besides the local prehistoric and Roman finds, there is an Egyptian and Coptic collection, Greek vases and even a room of Maya ceramics.

Outdoors, the Orto Lapidario steps down over four levels among Roman reliefs and inscriptions from Aquileia and Istria and Greek and Roman sculptures. The Giardino del Capitano, meanwhile, keeps towers and walls of the 15th- and 16th-century city and the stones saved when old Trieste buildings were demolished.

From the Orto Lapidario you go down beneath the cathedral, to the remains of an ancient Roman propylaeum and its staircase.

The garden also holds a small classical temple with the cenotaph of Winckelmann, the great German scholar of ancient art. In 1768, passing through Trieste, he was stabbed in an inn by the man in the next room, who wanted to steal the medals he had been given in Vienna.
