Description
The Felice Ippolito National Antarctic Museum brings the white continent to Trieste: its home, on the university campus in the San Giovanni park, gathers rocks, marine finds and the stories of the polar explorers.
The exhibition has three sections. The first shows how Antarctica was mapped over the centuries, with some original historical maps. The second follows the race to the South Pole of Scott, Amundsen and Shackleton. The third is devoted to the Italian expeditions, from the early 20th century to the most recent research.
Interactive stations and multimedia displays also explore Antarctica's climate, both today's and that of past eras.
The museum was founded in 1996 and is named after the geologist Felice Ippolito, its first president; the Trieste branch opened in 2004, while another branch is in Siena.
