The Postal and Telegraph Museum of Central Europe occupies the ground floor of the Post Office Palace, on Piazza Vittorio Veneto in Trieste: it tells how letters and telegrams traveled when the city was the great port of the Habsburg Empire.
In the middle of the hall, inside an octagonal structure, is the reconstruction of a late-19th-century post office. There is also a complete military field post office, telegraphs from various periods, maps of the mail routes and some of the first cell phones.
The building is worth a look too: a Neo-Renaissance palace from 1894 with a glass-roofed central hall, designed by the Austrian architect Friedrich Setz, who drew twenty-six post office buildings across the Empire, from Trento to Kraków.
Next to the entrance is a fragment of the Elettra, Guglielmo Marconi's laboratory ship.
