Description

The Museo Sveviano is the centre for documentation and study of Italo Svevo, the Triestine author of "Zeno's Conscience". Since 2023 it has been housed in LETS - Museo della Letteratura, on Piazza Attilio Hortis, in the centre of Trieste.

It holds the writer's autograph manuscripts and his vast correspondence, first editions of his books annotated in his own hand, family photographs and some personal belongings: a bookcase wardrobe, a violin, a gold pen. There are also his personal library and translations of his works.

Svevo was in fact Ettore Schmitz, a bank clerk and later an industrialist. "A Life" and "As a Man Grows Older" went almost unnoticed, so much so that he came close to giving up literature. Critical attention arrived only with "Zeno's Conscience", in 1923.

Among the people he met was James Joyce, his teacher in Trieste: his influence can be felt in Svevo's attention to the unconscious.
