Description
Trieste's Botanical Garden is a scientific garden of about one hectare on the side of Chiadino Hill, on Via Marchesetti: a quiet green corner where some 1,200 plants grow, above all the flora of the Karst and Venezia Giulia.
The route takes you from the garden of medicinal plants, with their healing properties, to the aquatic and marsh plants in the pools and greenhouses, and on to the path of poisonous plants, which reveals how toxic some common species you come across every day can be. The garden also has a reconstruction of a dinosaur found at Villaggio del Pescatore.
The garden was founded in 1842, but its roots go back to 1828, when the pharmacist Bartolomeo Biasoletto tried to get the black pine to take hold on the Karst. His bust is still in the garden. As early as 1877 the garden published a yearly list of seeds to exchange with other botanical gardens, a tradition revived in 1996.
