Description
Palazzo Brambilla Morpurgo is a 19th-century neoclassical palazzo on Largo Papa Giovanni XXIII in Trieste, home of the Stelio Crise State Library. Plain on the outside, inside it shows off the taste for luxury of Trieste's wealthy middle class.
Don't miss the rooms of the piano nobile, with stucco and frescoed ceilings in different styles, redone several times to keep up with fashion. They can be visited in small groups, on request to the staff. The library holds more than 200,000 volumes, mostly in the humanities.
Designed by Francesco Bruyn between 1840 and 1843, the palazzo has had an eventful life: Giuseppe Brambilla, who had it built, never lived there and sold it to Elio Morpurgo. Between the wars it housed the Fascist militia, then the trade unions, until the state bought and restored it.
