Description

The Palazzo del Governo is the building on Trieste's Piazza Unità d'Italia that glitters with golden mosaics: built in 1905 as the seat of the Austrian Lieutenancy, it now houses the Prefecture. It stands on the right side of the square as you face the sea.

Don't miss the mosaics of the façade, which light up with reflections at sunset, and the central double portico. Those facing the square show the coat of arms of the House of Savoy; the two short sides keep the originals, with the black double-headed eagle of the Habsburgs on a gold background.

The coat of arms changed in the early 1920s, when Trieste passed to Italy. On the building there is also a plaque with the proclamation of the 1918 victory at sea, which, with a touch of fantasy, lists Trento among the naval victories.
