Description
The Palazzo del Tergesteo is the large neoclassical block between Piazza della Borsa and Piazza Verdi, in the center of Trieste: inside it hides a cross-shaped covered arcade lined with shops, once the beating heart of the city's business.
The highlight is the arcade, cross-shaped and once open on all four sides, under a roof of iron and glass. In the restoration completed in 1957 it was replaced by a glass-block vault; the one of 2009–2011 brought it back to how it was.
The palace was built between 1840 and 1842 by a company of shareholders, among them Baron Pasquale Revoltella, to a design by Francesco Bruyn. The shops did not do well, and from 1844 the Stock Exchange moved onto the ground floor; for decades the upper floors housed the Austrian Lloyd.
On the second floor Italo Svevo worked in a bank, and part of Zeno's Conscience takes place right here. As a child the composer Ferruccio Busoni also lived here, in his mother's apartment overlooking the Teatro Verdi.
