Description
Miramare Park, spanning twenty-two hectares, is the culmination of an ambitious project undertaken by Maximilian of Habsburg over many years on the rocky promontory of Grignano between 1856 and 1860.
For the design, Maximilian sought the expertise of Carl Junker, while for the botanical aspect he initially turned to the gardener Josef Laube, later replacing him with Anton Jelinek, who had participated in the renowned circumnavigation expedition of the frigate “Novara”.
The works, commenced in the spring of 1856, were constantly overseen by Maximilian, who never ceased to take an interest in his garden even after settling in Mexico, from where he would send numerous plants.
