Description
The Parco della Rimembranza is the green slope of San Giusto Hill in Trieste: a lawn climbing between the castle and Via Capitolina, dotted with Karst stones engraved with the names of the fallen of every war.
The park was laid out between 1933 and 1935 to a design by the engineer Vittorio Privileggi. At the top stands the War Memorial by Attilio Selva and Enrico Del Debbio, dedicated to the Trieste volunteers who died in World War I.
At the other end, a fountain as tall as an obelisk looks down on the Giants' Staircase, the long flight of steps that runs down to Piazza Goldoni. The flower beds on the slope trace the city's coat of arms, the white halberd on a red field, which you can see clearly from the square.
The fountain was inaugurated in 1938 for Mussolini's visit, then stood dry for a long time and only started working again in 2006. From the top of the hill, the view reaches all the way to the sea.
