Description
Santa Maria Maggiore is the great Baroque Jesuit church of Trieste, at the foot of San Giusto Hill on Via del Collegio: a two-tier façade divided by Corinthian pilasters and, inside, a broad, solemn interior.
Inside, laid out as a Latin cross with three naves, the highlights are the dome frescoed by Giuseppe Bernardino Bison with the four Evangelists and, in the apse, the Immaculate Conception painted by Sebastiano Santi in 1842. In the chapel to the right of the apse is the Madonna della Salute, attributed to Sassoferrato.
The construction was long and ill-fated: the first stone was laid in 1627, and a month after the consecration in 1682 a fire destroyed the wooden dome. The present one only arrived in 1817. It has been a diocesan shrine since November 21, 2011, the feast of the Madonna della Salute.
